Amazon Australia sellers please take note, Australia is levying GST soon!

Cifnews understands that the Federal Parliament of Australia has passed law that will extend goods and services tax (GST) to low value imports of physical goods (defined as customs declaration value of less than or equal to AUD1,000) imported by consumers from 1st July 2018. This is undoubtedly a heavy news for overseas e-commerce sellers.

If you sell low-value imported goods to Australian consumers and the total sales reach the threshold of AUD75,000 or more in 12 months, you will need to register and pay for GST.

Companies that meet the GST registration threshold of AUD75,000 within 12 months will need to:

  • Register for GST with Australian Taxation Office (ATO)

  • charge GST on taxable sales

  • Report GST to ATO

  • Pay GST to ATO.

The new law stipulates that companies that meet the registration threshold must register for and pay GST. If the company does not fulfill its obligations under the new regulations, it may be subjected to punishment.

What is GST?

GST refers to taxes imposed on most goods and services sold in Australia. The tax rate is 10%.

Who Charges GST?

If you are a merchant that sells low-value goods directly to Australia, you may be required to charge GST at the time of sale.

If you are an operator of an online sales platform (such as an application or website) where merchants sell low-value goods to Australian consumers through the platform, you will be responsible for charging GST.

If you sell a low-value item through an online sales platform, the operator of the online sales platform will be responsible for charging GST.

If you are a re-deliverer who assists the consumer in shipping the goods to Australia; you may be required to charge GST as a re-deliverer for the goods.

Under the new law, transporters are usually not re-deliverers and are not responsible for charging GST.
